PHRONESIS SERIES

Phronesis is an ancient Greek virtue. It is wisdom foundational to practical action. The series will have ten fine art pieces to illustrate a book I am working on with other veterans. More details on the book to come at a later date.

The illustration “ARES GOD OF WAR” is accompanied with Plato’s quote, “Only the dead have seen the end of war.” I chose this combo because history has shown that war has touched every generation. My father was drafted during the Vietnam War, I fought in the Iraq War and now my son is serving in the Marines as tensions escalate with both China and Russia. Unfortunately, war is part of the human condition.

The composition started with the “Bust of Mars of Ultor” (Roman marble sculpture, 2nd Century AD). Mars was the reincarnation of Ares, the Greek God of War. I then blended in a modern armor plate carrier and a high cut ballistic helmet. The 13“ x 18” original is rendered in an academic art style using graphite and colored pencil on illustration board.
